I have my own style and I am almost never in awe of anyone else’s—but Madonna is the girl after my own heart. Whether it’s completely on her own or with a group of stylists—I don’t care—I want to get lost in her dressing room.

While she certainly takes great care of herself, genes do play a huge role in aging. Macrobiotic or not, your cells still break down. If you have good genes the process is slower. My dermatologist tells me how he wishes he could take credit for the way I look at 48—but instead he insists genes are the reason. I had my amazing Sicilian grandmother Frances to thank (she looked 60 at age 90) and Madonna’s did too. Madonna’s recent switch back to long blonde locks (like mine) have been a subject of doppelgänger for me.

During half time I was texting back and forth to my daughter K who was at her boyfriends house, her reaction to Madonna and her performance was surprisingly the complete opposite of mine.

Me: She rocked it! I so love Madonna!

K: Ahahahaha you’re kidding right?

Me: No, I love her. She’s a great performer and she’s 53!

K: I thought that was terrible. A 53 year old should not be doing those dance moves. Her daughter was probably so embarrassed.

Perhaps Ks reaction was because she sees too much of me in Madonna. We continued the conversation when she arrived home.

K: ” I said to my boyfriend, mom could easily be Madonna and that is horrifying to me”

That was an interesting perspective for me to hear. Is my daughter embarrassed about how I look or the way I dress? She does hate when people sometimes think we are sisters instead of mother/daughter.

Me: “You and Madonna’s daughter are lucky to have young looking moms! Would you rather us walk around in house dresses with slippers?

Ultimately, I believe that “K” paid me a huge compliment in her own weird teenage way. So thanks “K”, I can only hope that when I am 53, I look that good!

Madonna’s new song however did not resonate with me— it was a little too bubble gum for my taste—but I am sure it will be brilliantly remixed on the dance floor. I think its flavored after “Hey Mickey” by Tony Basil and conceptually the performance was too! Check it out!

On Saturday, September 4, 2010 Surf Lodge hosted a fundraiser for Surf America, a not-for-profit to promote the growth, competitive success, and positive image of surfing in the USA and to provide the best possible experience for all participants. Quincy’s mom Paulette Davis asked if I would donate some keys for the auction, along with other jewelry designers such as Helena Ficalora and Jill Platner. The Sterling Silver Key necklaces (clock key with Moonstone, shown below with rubellite and jewel box key 7 with rubellite) raised over $600.00.

By day, Laura Michaels is the Chief Creative Office of Fusebox, a successful interactive agency, but on the side she runs a business designing and selling jewelry, cuffs and buckles.  She casts a rock star aura, and perhaps it should be no surprise that her pieces have been worn by celebs such as Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Mickey Rourke and Uma Thurman, but when we sat down to talk about her journey as a designer, I was struck by her generous, down-to-earth nature.

kassandra and i drove out to montauk (my favorite place on the east coast) friday during the snow storm in manhattan. as we continued to drive east the snow disappeared.—when we arrived in montauk @ 11:30pm there was none. we got up super early saturday morning (8am) and went to gurneys to take an ashtanga yoga class with tracey gardell—so sore after! then we went to joni’s grabbed some breakfast and headed to ditch with sonné in the landcruiser (i love that truck but it has no power steering and after yoga it was a bitch to steer)—she had a blast—i can’t wait till spring! there were a few surfers braving the cold. at 6pm we headed to east hampton to have a yummy dinner at della femina’s, then to guild hall for the screening of mean streets with a post talk with alec baldwin, you gotta love him—super funny! then to the talkhouse to see dalton and the bastards of boom. it was such a surprise to see pico playing with dalton (he’s kassandra’s friend milo’s dad!) we had a great relaxing weekend!

elizabeth strebs birthday party was one of those new york moments that you want to freeze in time. jim lewis, philipe petit, trisha brown, kate clinton, anna deavere smith, craig dykers, cynthia mayeda, ted berger, burt barr, ralph lemon, and host of other fabulous new yorkers gathered together to celebrate with the queen of extreme action. the party was hosted at the loft she shares with her partner laura flanders. i am honored to be part of streb and to serve on her board—supporting extreme action heros all over the world, this is truly a great organization. i have my best friend kim cullen to thank for this experience—you go kim! here i am with elizabeth wearing an urban outfitters dress, black prada boots, assorted sterling silver vintage keys. elizabeth is wearing one of my vintage key hole cuffs.

Tuesday night, my loft served as the venue for a small, private dinner party to benefit More Art, a not-for-profit organization that connects groundbreaking artists with local communities by bringing dynamic works to the public. Hosted by artist Marina Abramovic, whose highly anticipated retrospective at MOMA opens 3/14—a must see. The event was the first in a series of private fundraisers that reflect More ART’s desire to create intimate art experiences as a means of promoting creative efforts.

Guests (who consisted of curators, collectors, writers and artists) were asked to wear white lab coats and feasted on a sumptuous menu of food (pork specifically and fish for the vegetarians) and wines prepared by Chef and Artist Keil Borrman who is pictured in the painting behind the cutting board is in a pretty compromising position (LOL). The painting served as the menu and Keil would appear as each course was served to talk about energy transformation as it related to each course which was the theme for the evening.

Before dessert, Marina had us drink 24 carat gold water from beautiful glassware and meditate for 3 minutes, which was a wonderful experience.

Everyone received a special, pre-edition copy of Marina Abramovic’s Energy Blanket. Made in collaboration with More Art, the Energy Blanket is a unique art object that depicts the artist’s body and energy lines and contains magnets carefully situated to improve circulation. It is designed to instill a profound feeling of wellness, and judging from how well I slept last night, it succeeds in doing just that. It will be available for sale at the MOMA next month.

great event last night at the museum of the city of new york on 103rd street. loved hanging with my cousins jayne and joan michaels—rock star interior decorators and meeting all their friends (i’m bummed i ran out last night without my camera—so that you could see me with my cousins!) cindy allen editor and chief of interior design magazine held a panel discussion with gunnar birkerts, donald albrecht and phyllis ross on organic designed furniture from 1940-1955. featured were pieces from larry weinberg (Joans boyfriend) and andy lin’s collection, some are prototype piece that larry and andy have collected throughout the years—which have never been seen—pretty awesome stuff. i encourage you to check it out if you are a collector like me or just into furniture design—running through feb 8. this exhibit is presented in conjunction with eero saarinen: shaping the future, a selection of furniture, textiles, and print materials that demonstrates the height of the modern movement in American home design.

went to montauk this weekend to chill at my cottage with kassandra and the dogs—its so great to be able to hang with friends and hear some fantastic music in the middle of the winter in this little resort hamlet. after tracey gardell made this awesome dinner (very french) of freshly caught cod by arden we all headed out to the stephen talkhouse in amagansett. bands featured were bastards of boom with telly and matty and the big up. i got there just as matty was finishing his set but he is an awesome guitar player—he looks like a young robert plant—definitely has great stage presence. telly was a bit of a really wonderful surprise— i’ve never heard of him before and it was pretty amazing to see him play with dalton and the bastards and then do a few solo pieces on his own, he is an extremely talented guitar player, drummer and song writer. bastards, well there is just no words to explain how awesome they are, and how super talented dalton is, the show is always a big dance party. dalton, a good friend is shown here wearing one of my sterling silver vintage scamp key necklaces with a hidden stone.
